    About this item

For sale is a Rare Original Boer War Period City Imperial Volunteers Banner Flag. This also comes with an original The C.I.V and the war in South Africa 1900, the city press illustrated souvenir of the city of London imperial volunteers. On one of the back pages of this magazine you can see the same flag being flown in the photo titled “The C.I.V passing the mansion house on the war to Nine Elms.”

White cotton with a selvedge at each vertical edge and a machine stitched hem at each horizontal edge. The flag is printed in red with a St George's Cross extending to all edges. In the upper hoist canton, a dagger, point uppermost, above which is a stylised crown. In the lower hoist canton are the unit initials, ' C.I.V.' Please note there is damage and several holes which can be seen in the photographs.    The City of London Imperial Volunteers were raised in December 1899 by the Lord Mayor of London and were equipped at the expense of the City Corporation. Recruited from men serving in the volunteer units in the London area, it eventually comprised two companies of mounted infantry, one battalion of infantry and one battery of artillery. The regiment embarked for South Africa in January 1900.   This flag was probably used as a street decoration in London when the unit either left for service overseas during the Boer War (1899-1902) or when it returned from South Africa.   This exceptionally rare piece, and measures;   53cm width x 80cm length    The only other example of this flag can be found in the national army museum in london. With the reference number; NAM. 1968-01-26-1.    These are guaranteed original or money back guarantee.    This will be sent via special delivery and dispatched within two working days.
